Vivah Panchami celebrates the marriage of Lord Ram with Goddess Sita, and the connection between Janakpudham and Ayodhya. The city is said to be decorated “as a bride” for the festival. The sacred geography of the city is renewed through religious rituals and public events performed in key locations, mostly starting from Janaki Mandir but also through processions that lead devotees, priests, sadhus and babas to other key places such as Ram Mandir, Bahra Bigha Rangaboomi, Ganga Sagar, as if to physically and publicly renew the connection of locations in the city to the mythical narrations of Janakpur as the birthplace of Goddess Sita.
